Havana, October 5 (RHC)-- Cuba denounced the unjust anti-democratic financial architecture that prevails globally and called for its urgent transformation.

In a virtual address to the 15th Ministerial Meeting of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) underway in Barbados, the Cuban Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment (MINCEX), Rodrigo Malmierca, stressed that the situation has become even worst amidst the global health crisis provoked by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has increased inequalities between developed and underdeveloped countries.

Malmierca noted that the achievement of the 2030 Agenda's Sustainable Development Goals is now threatened, called UNCTAD to raise awareness in favor of a just an equitable economic order, and warned that revitalizing the multilateral organization should not lead to change or to reduce its mandate.

On the other hand, the Foreign Trade Minister recalled that Cuba continues to work on its National Socio-Economic Development Plan for 2030, despite the 60-year illegal, genocidal economic and financial blockade imposed by the United States.

The 15th Ministerial Meeting of UNCTAD  (UNCTAD 15) began on Sunday and will last until Thursday. It got underway on Monday and is being hailed as a platform to put development back on track.

Heads of State and Government, Senior UN Officials, leaders of intergovernmental organizations, and top trade experts will share their vision of the solutions required, including the role of trade, in forging a more inclusive and sustainable way forward.
