Havana, December 20 (RHC)-- The Ministry of Culture and Casa de las Americas is hosting an academic-cultural conference to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Literacy Campaign, one of the milestones of the Cuban Revolution.

Convened by the Institute of Cuban History and the Literacy Museum, the initiative incorporates the experiences of renowned intellectuals, among them the director of the Literacy Campaign Museum, Luisa Campos, the National Literature Prize winner Nancy Morejón and the notable painter, engraver, and ceramist Diana Balboa.

Hosted at the José Martí Memorial in Havana, the meetings will include the round tables How the Campaign Changed My Life, Testimonies from Culture and Continuity of the Campaign, and the awarding of the Literacy Historical Memory contest.

Casa de las Americas will host the lectures The Campaign as a Cultural Revolution by writer Victor Fowler, and The International Dimension of the Campaign, by historian Rainer Schultz, from Harvard University.

Also noteworthy are the talks on The impact of the Campaign on Cuban women by Dr. Marta Núñez, sociologist and professor emeritus of the University of Havana, and The political context of the Campaign, by Dr. Rafael Hernández, political scientist and director of Temas magazine.

Until December 22, the conference will analyze the impact of the mass phenomenon materialized with the Literacy Campaign, its educational, cultural and political implications after the declaration of the first territory free of illiteracy in Latin America, and the leadership and strength of the youth throughout the island that responded to the call of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro.
