Havana, January 22 (RHC) -- Cuba can generate around 1,100 megawatts of electricity by harnessing the power of the wind (wind energy), experts said Saturday.

Professor Alfredo Roque, a researcher at the Center for Atmospheric Physics of the Institute of Meteorology, told local newspaper Granma that the Caribbean nation has the most favorable conditions for developing this renewable energy source.

In this sense, he argued that the archipelago presents few environmental obstacles that hinder the use of the intensity of the wind and said that studies confirm the existence of 21 areas that meet the requirements for the installation of wind farms.

Roque said that climate projections suggest that surface wind speed will increase to a greater or lesser extent in the 21st century in most of the national territory, which supports the priority given to implementing the Cuban wind program until 2030.

The construction of 13 such sites is planned, which should increase the contribution to the national electro-energy system and contribute to eliminating dependence on fossil fuels.

Currently, only 0.1 percent of the country's electric energy is generated by this means, according to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Planning, Alejandro Gil, in the most recent session of the Cuban National Assembly.
