Havana, May 14 (RHC) The Cuban Parliament approved a law on Saturday for the protection and access to personal data during the fifth extraordinary session of this legislative body, which will be held until next Monday.

The regulation, unprecedented in the country, recognizes the right of citizens to know everything related to the treatment of their information and to request its rectification, correction, modification, and updates to those who possess it.

According to the opinion approved by the deputies after the analysis of the legal text, the law reinforces the institutional guarantees to the privacy of individuals and the access to their data, which constitutes a third-generation human right.

The Minister of Justice, Oscar Silvera, pointed out that the legal norm gives continuity to the mandate of the 2019 Constitution, regulates an issue that has had a significant impact on the country's public life in recent years and inserts the island in an advanced trend at international level.

The parliamentarians highlighted the importance of a legal body of this type in a context marked by the relevance of data in contemporary societies, connectivity processes, digitization, and automation of services.

The Minister of Communications, Mayra Arevich, said that the law strengthens the existing legal norms related to new technologies and telecommunications and called to complement it through educational work with users, especially young people.
