Ciego de Avila to host National Environment Day Event

Havana, June 1 (RHC) The central Cuban province of Ciego de Avila will host the national celebrations of World Environment Day next June 5.

Odalys Goicochea Cardoso, general director of Environment of the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Environment (CITMA), announced this at a press conference in Havana.

He highlighted the improvement of environmental quality due to the fight against pollution, the progress of hygiene in communities, and the reconversion of infrastructures and technologies in the industrial sector to develop environmentally friendly production systems.

The province stands out for the recovery of 10.4 kilometers of beaches with the dumping of sand in the northern keys. This has reduced erosion in the area, increased the bathing area, and improved the natural conditions of the beaches in the Jardines del Rey tourist destination.

Sustainable production and consumption practices are also being introduced in the territory. Studies are being conducted on hazards, vulnerabilities, and risks associated with flooding due to heavy rains and phytosanitary disasters.

CITMA also valued the recent awarding of the Blue Park Award trophy, in the Gold category, to the Jardines de la Reina National Park, one of the 21 marine protected areas in the world and the only one in Cuba to obtain that award, conferred by the U.S. Marine Conservation Institute.
