Havana, July 8 (RHC)--The plenary session of the National Congress of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) concluded Friday with the words of Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel.

From Havana's Palacio de Convenciones, the president joined the debate aimed at exploring the paths of culture and the challenges faced by the associations to defend the values of the country from the different aesthetic expressions.

The intervention of the first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba followed a morning of exchanges in the commissions dedicated to evaluating the work carried out since the celebration of the IX Congress of UNEAC, in 2019, and the fulfillment of the guidelines outlined in that meeting.

During the meeting, the associations of scenic creators, radio, television and cinema, writers, musicians and plastic arts, the participants emphasized the relevance of the exercise of criticism in a coherent and professional manner, the improvement of the teaching system, as well as the management of budgets according to the needs of the schools.

They also evaluated the quality of the cultural proposals transferred to the virtual platforms during the on-site pause caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, while pointing out the challenge of improving the infrastructure of the sector's facilities.

The National Council of Uneac fostered the debate on various topics related to creation in different cultural scenarios, with the presence of more than one hundred intellectuals from the Caribbean nation.

After a two-year interruption due to the pandemic of the new coronavirus, this top management body reviewed the functioning of UNEAC and favored the exchange on the contributions and incidences of writers and artists.

Dedicated to the island's National Poet, Nicolás Guillén, on the 120th anniversary of his birth, the conclave highlighted the work developed and traced new routes to continue defending the homeland from the field of culture.
