Fort Worth, Texas, July 13 (RHC)—The U.S. Department of Transportation has approved American Airlines' request to begin flying to five additional Cuban cities starting in November, the Dallas Business Journal reported.

The Fort Worth-based American currently flies six times daily to Havana from its hub in Miami.

The carrier had submitted an application last month asking the federal government for approval to start flying to Santa Clara, Holguin, Santiago, Varadero and Camagüey following the Biden administration's decision to reverse Trump-era restrictions on flying to Cuba.

All of the additional flights would be served from Miami. Under the plan approved by the DOT, American will fly twice daily to Santa Clara and once daily to Holguin, Varadero, Camagüey, and Santiago.

"These additional frequencies will enhance service and access between the United States and other cities outside of Havana, as well as offer the best connectivity to Cuba via American’s Miami hub," spokeswoman Gianna Urgo said in a statement.

The Dallas Business Journal noted that American had previously flown to the five Cuban cities from 2016 until 2019 when the Trump administration reversed the measures toward Cuba adopted by  Former President Barack Obama.

The Biden administration ended the prohibition on U.S. airline flights to Cuban airports other than Havana in an order issued by the DOT last month.
