Havana, July 18 (RHC)-- Cuban Deputy Prime Minister Ricardo Cabrisas on Monday met with South African Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Alvin Botes, who began an official visit to the Caribbean island on Sunday.

The government representatives evoked the figure of Nelson Mandela on the occasion of the commemoration of his International Day. They highlighted his relationship with Fidel Castro and the impetus that both leaders gave to bilateral relations.

Cabrisas pointed out that Botes’ visit takes place in the context of the global crisis that affects both countries and that his program of activities in Cuba will benefit both parties.

The Cuban official added that there are many opportunities between the two countries because, among other reasons, they have 15 cooperation documents under discussion, signed or in execution at the government level, which must be given greater momentum.

The Cuban deputy prime minister also expressed his condolences for the death of the anti-apartheid activist and deputy secretary of the African National Congress party Jessie Duarte.

Botes evoked the meaning of Mandela’s relationship with Fidel Castro to strengthen solidarity with Cuba and expressed gratitude for the message of condolences for the physical disappearance of Duarte.

The South African deputy minister added that although right-wing elements in his country try to undermine relations with Cuba, the spirit and commitment of solidarity with the island are maintained.
