UNGA demand to remove Cuba from the list of sponsors of terrorism

Havana, Nov 2 (RHC) Several countries and international organizations described as unjust and inhumane the inclusion of Cuba on the list of countries sponsoring terrorism and denounced at the United Nations the damage it causes to its citizens.

The elimination of the island from that list became a unanimous demand in the opening sessions of the two days of debates being held at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on the draft resolution to put an end to the US blockade against Cuba.

The representative of Argentina, María del Carmen Squeff, expressed her country's disagreement with the classification of Cuba as an alleged State sponsor of terrorism.

In addition to being an unsubstantiated categorization, "it increases the intimidating effect of the restrictions associated with the blockade and aggravates the possibilities of that nation to establish commercial and financial relations", she said.

Juan Ramón de la Fuente, Mexico's ambassador to the United Nations, said that this classification is nonsense and constitutes an additional affectation to the Antillean people and government by preventing financial operations and other transactions.

The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), in the voice of the permanent representative of Azerbaijan, Yashar Aliyev, repudiated this act and considered it an unfounded accusation.

Speaking on behalf of the Caribbean Community (Caricom), the ambassador of the Bahamas, Stan Smith, called for the elimination of Cuba from the list of countries sponsoring terrorism which, additionally, aggravates the effects of the blockade and is an obstacle to recovery after the damage left by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The representative of the Central American Integration System said that the arbitrary inclusion of the Cuban nation in that category reinforces its difficulties to be inserted in world trade and carrying out financial operations, by causing the closing of contracts, loss of banking relations, with high costs for the citizens.

Cuba will present, for the thirtieth time, the report before the UNGA on the need to eliminate the economic, commercial, and financial blockade maintained by the United States for more than 60 years.

Recently, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez denounced that the losses amounted to three thousand 806 million dollars between August 2021 and February 2022. (Source: PL)
