Havana, November 28 (RHC)-- This Sunday, shortly before the closing of polling stations, it was reported that 63.85% of the total number of registered voters for the municipal elections in Cuba exercised their right to vote.

The information, provided to the press by the spokesman of the National Electoral College (CEN), Denys Buedo, means that 5 million 332 thousand 591 citizens went to the polls to elect delegates to the municipal assemblies of the People's Power, the main body of the State at the local level.

The counting of votes began at 19:00, local time on Sunday, after the CEN decided to extend the voting hours for one more hour at the request of several polling stations in the country.

To be elected a candidate must receive 50% plus one of the total votes and will exercise his mandate, on a non-professional basis, for five years, according to the changes introduced by the 2019 Constitution.

If a second round is necessary, it will be held next December 4, and on the 17th of that month these local bodies of the People's Power will be officially constituted.

Authorities reported that the day passed with discipline and order, without major incidents.

These are the first elections after the restructuring of the Cuban electoral system and the enactment of a new electoral law under the Constitution approved in 2019.
