Seismologists warn about increased activity in eastern Cuba

Santiago de Cuba, Nov 29 (RHC) A significant increase in seismic activity in eastern Cuba has been warned by experts from the National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS).

Enrique Arango, CENAIS Deputy Technical Director reported that this activity has been felt since November 18, when these imperceptible records for the population began to rise in the provinces of Camagüey and Las Tunas. He explained that this active zone north of these territories has no precedents in the instrumental seismic record and its incidences are systematically followed from the respective stations.

At the end of the first semester of 2022, seismicity in Cuba did not have anomalies, despite the very high telluric occurrence registered south of the archipelago, specifically to the southwest of Haiti and linked to the 7.3-magnitude earthquake reported on August 14, 2021.

With about nine perceptible tremors during the year, the CENAIS and its National Seismological Service (SSNC) have kept a close watch on these events and a sign of the expansion of its networks was the recent inauguration of a unit in the Cuban capital, located in Casablanca, the headquarters of the Institute of Meteorology.

They favor the operation of the SSNC in western Cuba, where these natural phenomena are also reported, but they are not as frequent as in the southeastern region. (Source: Prensa Latina)
