Bridgetown, Dec 6 (RHC) On Tuesday, Barbadian media highlighted the agreement signed between the governments of Cuba and Barbados for the use of the Cuban drug Heberprot-P in the treatment of diabetic foot disease in the population of this country.

Under the headline "Cuba will help Barbados to fight the diabetes epidemic", the Barbados Today newspaper quoted Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, who said that the two nations will work together to make this project a reality in the coming months.

During the official visit of Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel to Bridgetown, it was agreed to promote the use of this biotechnological product, unique in the world, to reduce the amputation of lower limbs of people suffering from this ailment in this territory.

Barbados is in the midst of a diabetes epidemic and the use of this drug will change the lives of many people, said Mottley, according to the newspaper.

Barbados Today also reported that the prime minister thanked Havana for sending a medical brigade to help the island in the care of COVID-19 patients.

"I would not know where we would be a year from now if we do not maintain a contractual relationship with the health personnel of the sister nation, since our public health system deeply needs additional support in the nursing area," she said.

The newspaper also commented on the signing of another agreement between ExportBarbados and BioCubaFarma to establish a commercial association between the two entities.

Meanwhile, Nation News referred to the signing of this memorandum of understanding which, it said, will pave the way for cooperation between the two Caribbean nations in the areas of health and pharmaceuticals.

The Cuban president is here on a two-day official visit and today participated in the VIII Caricom-Cuba Summit, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between his country and Barbados, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, and Jamaica.
