University of Havana

Havana, Jan 5 (RHC) President Miguel Díaz-Canel highlighted on Thursday the important role of the University of Havana in Cuba’s development, on the occasion of celebrating the 295th anniversary of that institution.

Through his Twitter account, the president congratulated the students, graduates, professors, and workers of what he described as "Cuba's flagship university, which today is celebrating its 295th anniversary, renewed and fully involved in the development of the country. We always count on you to continue building a better nation”.

For his part, Prime Minister, Manuel Marrero, pointed out on his official page of that social network that this important educational institution "during its 295 years, has welcomed various generations of Cuban patriots, monopolizing a large part of the history of the struggle of our country".

The University of Havana, one of the first created in America, was founded on January 5, 1728, with headquarters in the convent of San Juan de Letrán, and was called the Royal and Pontifical University of San Gerónimo de La Habana.

It currently has 19 faculties and three study and research centers and is linked to the scientific and business world through projects that contribute to national development in various fields, with a significant social impact.

The house of higher studies has more than 800 doctors and nearly two thousand professors in its faculties,  around 700 collaboration agreements with some 80 countries and belongs to all related Latin American and European organizations.

Emblematic figures of the Caribbean nation such as Julio Antonio Mella, José Antonio Echeverría, and the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, studied in its classrooms. (Source: PL)
