Scientist Yanira Méndez

Havana, Jan 27 (RHC) The German chemical-pharmaceutical company Bayer awarded the prize in Medical Sciences to Cuban scientist Yanira Méndez, the Finlay Vaccine Institute announced Thursday.

"Bayer, one of the world's major biopharmaceutical companies, awarded the prize in Medical Sciences to Yanira Méndez Gómez, who did her doctorate jointly between SintLab and the Finlay Institute of Vaccines and IPB of Germany," the scientific entity specified on the social network Twitter.

"Congratulations to you, your tutors, and Cuban Science," the message highlights.

The award to the scientist is for the development of new methods to elaborate antibacterial vaccines and modify antibodies to obtain anticancer agents.

The Laboratory of Chemical and Biomolecular Synthesis (Sintlab) of the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Havana is a joint research and innovation entity with the business group BioCubaFarma.

Sintlab participated from the beginning as one of the three main entities in the research and innovation work that led to the development of Soberana vaccines.

This project was led by the Finlay Vaccine Institute, with the participation of the Center for Molecular Immunology.

In 2020, the National Commission of Scientific Degrees recognized the best PhDs in different areas of knowledge, awarded between September 2018 and July 2019.

Among those chosen was the work of Yanira Méndez, with the thesis Multicomponent reactions in the synthesis of antibacterial protease inhibitors and candidate glycoconjugate vaccines. (Source: PL).
