Cuban Foreign Minister denounces little implementation of UN goals

Havana, May 12 (RHC) The Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodríguez, today described the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals as alarming.

Rodríguez warned that only 12 percent of the goals are on track, which means that 575 million people will remain in extreme poverty in 2030, if current trends continue. He denounced that at the current rate, it could take the world up to 286 years to close the gender gaps in legal protection and eliminate discriminatory laws.

Rodríguez expressed his conviction that the states that make up the United Nations Organization (UN) and international organizations have time to reverse this trend, and made a call to remove the bases of the prevailing unfair economic order and uneven pattern of post-pandemic recovery from Covid-19.

The head of the Minrex recently also called to renew the commitment made by the international community to comply with the Sustainable Development Goals until 2030.

The head of Cuban diplomacy revealed the day before data from a UN report indicating that close to 50 percent of the goals have moderate progress or are seriously off track, and 30 percent are stagnant or regressed. In this sense, he called on the international community to modify the terms of the agreement and speed up the action times so that in 7 years the situation of non-compliance with the guidelines is reversed.

The Sustainable Development Goals are the heart of the 2030 Agenda and show a comprehensive, indivisible perspective, and a renewed international collaboration. They are made up of 17 goals, 169 targets, 247 global and 28 regional indicators. (Source: Prensa Latina)
