Havana, May 22 (RHC)-- The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel greeted Monday the World Day of Biological Diversity, celebrated in the country with challenges and commitments to protect the natural heritage.

On his Twitter profile, the president highlighted that the island is characterized by impressive biodiversity figures, such as the existence of 1,500 species of butterflies, more than 60 amphibians, 150 reptiles, almost 400 birds and more than 7,000 plants.

Biological diversity or biodiversity refers to the variety of existing living beings and the genetic differences of each species of animals, plants and microorganisms that are born, grow and develop in a given ecosystem.

It includes the different evolutionary processes and changes that occur with the species and the entire environment that surrounds them.

"In order for all human beings to live in a more sustainable world, it is necessary to implement drastic and urgent measures that allow the protection and preservation of all ecosystems, as well as the biological diversity that inhabits them", argues the United Nations Organization when proclaiming this event, which is celebrated in May of each year.
