Havana, June 5 (RHC)-- Cuban authorities reaffirmed on Monday, World Environment Day, the commitment of the state and government to develop actions to guarantee the care of natural resources.

The first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and president of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel ratified on Twitter as purposes to protect the country's natural resources and promote a healthy and balanced environment for all Cubans.

"That is the basis of the desired sustainable development," added the president in his tweet about the date, which has been celebrated in the world since 1973, to raise awareness among the population about the importance of caring for ecosystems and promoting respect for the environment.

For his part, Esteban Lazo Hernández, president of the National Assembly of People's Power (Parliament), celebrated World Environment Day, and stressed that the Cuban Constitution recognizes the right of people to enjoy a healthy and balanced environment.

"Cuba has regulations to materialize this purpose, such as a Law of the System of Natural Resources and Environment," Lazo Hernandez stressed in a message released Monday by the legislature.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz said on the same social network that World Environment Day is a propitious opportunity to call for the care of nature and to carry out concrete actions to combat environmental pollution.

She also stressed the importance of achieving a world without plastic pollution, which is the central theme in 2023, given the negative impact of the millions of tons of this type of waste produced annually.

On the subject, Cuba's Minister of Science, Technology and Environment, Elba Rosa Pérez, pointed out that this call for a plastic pollution-free world is made to reduce the incidence of plastic mismanagement, which affects the marine and terrestrial environment, damages biodiversity, contributes to global greenhouse gas emissions and disrupts the balance of ecosystems.
