Díaz-Canel pays tribute to Máximo Gómez

Havana, June 17 (RHC)-- Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez attends the ceremony taking place today at the Necropolis of Colón in the Cuban capital, on the occasion of the 118th anniversary of the death of General Máximo Gómez Baéz.

Also participating in the political and military ceremony are Army Corps General Ramón Espinosa Martín, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Party and first vice minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR), and other leaders of the political organization, the government, the armed forces and the Ministry of the Interior.

Fidel said of him that "he was the most brilliant Cuban chief and master of chiefs," the president wrote on his Twitter account. Cuba recognizes him as the Generalissimo, the supreme rank of the grateful people.Máximo Gómez died 118 years ago, surrounded by popular mourning and his legacy of heroism still inspires tributes, he said.

Born in Bani, Dominican Republic, Máximo Gómez Baéz joined the independence struggle in the Ten Years' War, during which, thanks to his tactics, military genius and victories, he reached the rank of Major General of the Liberation Army.

Together with José Martí and other patriots, he was one of the main organizers of the Necessary War. Elected General in Chief of the Revolutionary troops, during the war he led several important campaigns such as the Invasion of the West, the Circular Campaign and the Launching Campaign.

He died on June 17, 1905 in Havana, bidding farewell with the admiration and respect of the Cuban people, earned through years of dedication and battle for the triumph of the independence cause.
