Tribute to Antonio Maceo and Che in Costa Rica

Havana, Jun 18 (RHC) Cuban Ambassador to Costa Rica Jorge Rodriguez on Sunday highlighted the transcendence of the independent work of two figures in Cuban history: Antonio Maceo (1845-1896) and Ernesto Che Guevara (1928-1967).

On the occasion of their birthdays on June 14, the commemoration was also attended by Colombian Ambassador Carlos Rodriguez, the Chargés d’Affaires of Nicaragua and the Plurinational State of Bolivia, Valdrak Jainserjet and Jaime Quiroga, respectively, as well as members of the Cuba solidarity groups in Costa Rica and the Cuban Embassy.

At the tribute, Rodriguez stressed that these personalities of history are twinned not only in their date of birth but in the objective of liberating their country. They were men of action and thought.

The Cuban ambassador recalled that Maceo joined the war for Cuba’s independence from Spanish colonialism in the 19th century, one day after it began on October 10, 1868.

A member of a family from which most of his brothers joined the struggle, Maceo achieved the highest ranks in the Liberation Army, under the orders of Generalissimo Maximo Gomez, he recalled.

Establishing a parallel between the two figures, and recalling the 95th anniversary of Guevara’s birth, the ambassador stressed that like Maceo, Che, as the Argentine-Cuban guerrilla fighter is known, led the war from east to west in 1958, against the Fulgencio Batista dictatorship.

That same experience by Maceo and Gomez was replicated by Che; that is why they are historic symbols for Cubans.

The Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, Jaime Quiroga, described Che as an example of consequence and commitment, anti-imperialism and social organizations have him as a reference. Che is international, he said. (Source: Prensa Latina)
