Cuba and China want more joint studies on the human brain

 

Havana, Sep 9 (RHC) Cuba and China today seek to expand joint research projects in the field of brain diseases and specifically in brain mapping.

The president of the Cuban Academy of Sciences, Dr. Luis Velázquez Pérez, assured that in a recent exchange with colleagues from the National Science Foundation of China they agreed on the need to better understand the problems that affect the human brain.

The expert mentioned the visit of a Cuban delegation to the Chinese Academy of Sciences where the two parties promoted cooperation in studies related to neurosciences, neurotechnology, data science and other aspects.

Dr. Pedro, Valdés, director of the China-Cuba Joint Neurotechnology Laboratory in the city of Chengdu, was also part of the delegation. He explained that the intention is to raise the level of this center located in the south of China and make it part of the Belt and Road Initiative.

Valdés highlighted that the place already has a very high scientific productivity and maintains a very close collaboration link with the national science and technology program.

For his part, the director of the Institute of Neurosciences, Dr. Mitchell Valdés, highlighted to Prensa Latina the need for joint research with China on neurodegenerative diseases, brain mapping, search for treatments for different neurological diseases, among others.

As part of their agenda in that Chinese city, the Cuban experts visited the Institute of Materia Medica of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Shanghai Mental Health Center, where they spoke with its director Zhao Min.

Scientists from both countries strengthened their ties with the signing of a new collaboration agreement in neurosciences. (Source: PL)
