Havana, Sept 18 (RHC) Cuban experts advise a regional project of the Global Island Environment Fund on the prevention of the generation of waste from electrical and electronic equipment, reuse and recycling.

The initiative includes the Bahamas, Cuba and the Dominican Republic to promote the safe management of fluorescent lamps, pesticides (persistent organic compounds), electronic scrap and plastic waste, which constitute a growing threat to the environment.

Jorge Álvarez, general director of the Office of Environmental Regulation and Safety, explained that exchanges were held on technical assistance with Rosana John, legal consultant for the project, based in Granada, located in the southeast of the Caribbean Sea.

He added that the meetings with the counselor served to exemplify with national experiences the application in the region of the Basel Convention, in force since May 1992 after its adoption in that Swiss city.

Its objective is to reduce the generation of hazardous waste and its transboundary movement to a minimum, and ensure its environmentally sound management, for which it promotes international cooperation and creates coordination and monitoring mechanisms.

The Cuban professional also held a workshop on his administration with specialists from the ministries of Agriculture, Industries, Higher Education, Public Health, and Science, Technology and Environment, the University of Havana and the representation in Cuba of the Organization of the United Nations for Industrial Development.
