Tehran, December 4 (RHC) -- Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel sent his condolences to the family and colleagues of prominent filmmaker Daniel Diez, founder of Serrana television, through his account on the social network X today.

The president described Diez as a "tireless creator of an audiovisual work of powerful social and human impact, such as the emblematic Serrana Television, among many other contributions to Cuban Culture".

Respected and admired among Cuban intellectuals and artists for his merits as a film and television director, sound recordist and musicalizer, teacher and writer, Daniel Diez died the day before at the age of 77.

In January 1993, in the town of San Pablo de Yao, in the municipality of Buey Arriba, in the eastern province of Granma, he founded Televisión Serrana, a project that made the life of the inhabitants of the Sierra Maestra visible to Cuba and the world.

According to what he told Cubacine, that participatory and community center had as its embryo his participation as a brigadista in the Literacy Campaign in 1961 in the largest mountainous massif of the Caribbean island, which showed him how people live in those isolated areas of the country.

To these experiences he added his 16-year experience working as a sound recordist for the Icaic Latin American News, along with award-winning Cuban documentary filmmaker Santiago Alvarez, with whom he traveled the Antillean nation and made him understand the need for these people to be known, "because only then would they perceive how important they are to the identity of the nation.

Along with other filmmakers, he participated in about 20 works for Cuban cinema and television and about 30 others were of his authorship during his stay at Televisión Serrana, a project to which he dedicated a great part of his life and which, due to its relevance, received support from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.  (Source: Prensa Latina)
