Authorities from Mexico and Cuba highlight heritage value of the bolero

Havana, Dec 5 (RHC) Authorities and officials from Mexico and Cuba today expressed satisfaction with the inscription of the bolero on UNESCO's representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

After the favorable decision of the 18th Intergovernmental Committee on Intangible Cultural Heritage meeting in Kasane, the Secretary of Culture of Mexico, Alejandra Frausto, described what happened as positive news.

In a video message released at the Cresta Mowana Resort, Frausto stated that the registration is a boost in strengthening the plans to safeguard the bolero and in ensuring that this genre does not disappear.

According to Sonia Pérez, president of the National Council of Cultural Heritage of Cuba, the bolero has a strong sense of collective identity in both Cuban and Mexican cultures and has been transmitted from generation to generation.

Cecilia Tapia, from the Institute for the Preservation and Promotion of Bolero in Mexico, also highlighted the registration in the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and reiterated the commitment so that the bolero is properly taught, preserved and disseminated as living heritage.

She congratulated UNESCO for its work over the last 20 years in recognizing and safeguarding intangible cultural heritage, through the Convention adopted in this regard.

Regarding the decision of the Committee, meeting in Botswana, the Cuban ambassador to UNESCO, Yahima Esquivel, underlined that the registry is not limited to one genre, as it encompasses a mixture of cultures linked to the language, using European poetry, African rhythms and the experiences of indigenous peoples.

Frausto, Pérez, Tapia and Esquivel praised the joint work of the countries that presented the file, which was recognized by the Specialized Committee of UNESCO, made up of 24 of its member states. (Source: PL)
