Havana, December 18 (RHC) -- Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel on Monday urged the implementation of effective solutions, based on creative resilience, to circumvent the complex economic scenario the country is experiencing.

During the debates of the Economic Affairs Committee of the National Assembly of People's Power, prior to the second ordinary period of sessions in its 10th Legislature, the island's chief of state identified three main problems in national development, being the U.S. economic blockade the one that affects the nation the most.

He denounced that the country has experienced a more recrudescent blockade compared to previous years, as the 243 measures imposed during the administration of Donald Trump that have intensified the financial and energy persecution against Cuba.

The head of state highlighted the serious repercussions of the blockade, emphasizing that there are difficulties to pay for ships with food, which leads to a fractured distribution of the basic food basket, aggravating the economic conditions of the population.

He recalled that before the tightening of the blockade, Cuba had sources of financing, a stable entry of fuel and access to credits, which allowed it to import products and maintain social programs.

However, he stressed that, at present, remittances and available foreign currency have decreased.

In this regard, he reiterated the commitment to move forward into the future, without losing sight of the conviction and determination necessary to overcome the current economic challenges.

He considered that while measures must be taken to address these challenges, it is vital to do so in a comprehensive manner and considering the effects on different sectors of society, especially children, youth and the elderly. In the long term, he stressed, such measures will help to put the economy in order.

Regarding the mistakes made in the economic order, Díaz-Canel pointed out the need to rectify these deviations and establish adequate rules to guarantee a sustainable local development.

The Cuban president urged to address the problems with determination and optimism, highlighting the creative resistance visible in some provinces such as Villa Clara, where progress has been made in food production. In addition, he mentioned the concept of circular economy applied by some micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, which take advantage of waste to generate new products.
