Havana, April 27 (RHC)-- Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel attended on Saturday the celebration for the 65 years since the founding of the cultural institution based in Havana Casa de las Américas. 

At the event, which took place in the Sala Che Guevara, personalities with notable intellectual work linked to Casa de las Américas received the Haydeé Santamaría and Alejo Carpentier medals, as well as the Distinction for National Culture.

Founded in 1959 by Haydeé Santamaría, Casa de las Américas disseminates, investigates, sponsors, awards and publishes the work of writers, visual artists, musicians, theater artists and scholars of literature, the arts and social sciences of the continent.

It is conceived as a space for meeting and dialogue of different perspectives in a climate of innovative ideas.

Also attending the ceremony were the member of the Political Bureau and Secretary of Organization of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, Roberto Morales, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodríguez, as well as cultural personalities.

Also present are the Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic, Inés María Chapman Waugh; the head of Culture, Alpidio Alonso, and Abel Prieto, president of Casa de las Américas.

The day before, the Casa de las Américas Literary Prize was awarded in its 64th edition, and Argentina was the winner in three of the four categories that were awarded this year: Novel, Theatre, Essay on an artistic-literary theme and Literature for children and youths. (Source:  ACN/Prensa Latina).
