Cuban President thanks UN for statements against blockade

Havana, 30 October (RHC) Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel today thanked the more than 30 speakers who raised their voices at the United Nations to denounce the US policy of economic suffocation against the Caribbean nation.

The Head of State also acknowledged the statements rejecting the inclusion of the island on the unilateral list of countries that sponsor terrorism.

Today's victory will be resounding,' Díaz-Canel said on his X account, referring to the vote to be held this Wednesday by the UN General Assembly on the draft resolution presented by Cuba against the blockade imposed by the United States.

After more than three decades, the forum of 193 countries maintains a firm and almost unanimous stance against this set of measures, whose total losses are estimated at 499 billion dollars over more than six decades of application.

The most recent consideration of the draft resolution, in November 2023, resulted in 187 votes in favor, two votes against (the United States and Israel) and the abstention of one member state (Ukraine).

According to Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez, the US policy 'is like an act of war in peacetime'.

The decision to tighten the blockade in an unprecedented way during Covid-19 and to take advantage of the resulting world economic crisis to promote the destabilization of the country shows the perverse nature of this policy, the Foreign Minister denounced. (Source: Prensa Latina)
