Havana, October 18, (RHC), -- The leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro expressed Cuba's readiness to cooperate with the United States in the fight against Ebola, noting that the epidemic could spread to that northern country, where already one case has been reported.

In an article entitled "Time of Duty," published by Granma newspaper in its Saturday edition, Fidel Castro refers to the deadly outbreak of Ebola in West Africa, and stressed the importance of a joint response by the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean to put an end as soon as possible to this great danger.

The Cuban revolutionary also recalled Cuba's swift reaction to the call for aid made by international organizations, saying it has always been “our country's position to help others without making any distinctions.”

"Medical personnel that travel to any place to save lives, even at the risk of their own, is the greatest example of solidarity that humans can offer, especially when it is not driven by any material interest" said Fidel.

He also recognized the great burden that falls on decision makers in such a context, such as sending medical personnnel to fight a lethal disease.

“It is even more difficult than sending soldiers to fight and die for a just political cause,” he argued.

“We all understand that to accomplish this task with the utmost rapidity and efficiency, is to protect our people and those of sister nations of the Caribbean and Latin America,” he said.

Fidel Castro also mentioned the upcoming meeting next Monday in Havana of the member countries of ALBA, the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America, which will exclusively focus on designing a coordinated response to the Ebola epidemic and prevent its further spread.
