Venezuela's parliament approves agreement in solidarity with Cuba
Havana, Nov 13 (RHC) The National Assembly (Parliament) of Venezuela has approved an agreement in solidarity with Cuba following the recent natural disasters that have affected the island.
The document calls for unconditional support and immediate assistance to the Cuban people to ensure their physical well-being in the current circumstances, after being affected by two hurricanes in less than a month and an earthquake of magnitude 6.8 on the Richter scale.
During the regular session on Tuesday, Deputy William Fariñas, a member of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, briefly discussed the historical ties between the two countries, recalling that it was a Cuban woman the first to nurse the Liberator Simón Bolívar and highlighting that such ties took on a new dimension with the arrival of the Bolivarian Revolution in 1998, led by Commander Hugo Chávez (1954-2013).
He stressed that the Bolivarian leader and Fidel Castro forged an alliance based on socialist ideals and mutual cooperation, which was reflected in the Comprehensive Cooperation Agreement between the two countries signed in Havana on October 30, 2000.
Fariñas expressed gratitude for the solidarity of the island with Venezuela in areas such as education and healthcare through the missions, as well as in other sectors.
He noted that Cuba is experiencing the consequences of climate change, as evidenced by the current hurricane season, where two hurricanes struck the island from the east and west, causing extensive damage to state and private infrastructure.
On October 21, Hurricane Oscar impacted the eastern region of Guantánamo with a category one rating on the Saffir-Simpson scale, and 17 days later, Rafael crossed the western region with a category three rating.
In addition, two earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 and 6.8 on the Richter scale were recorded on Sunday, shaking the entire eastern region and parts of the central region, causing damage to homes and infrastructure and leaving several people injured.
The parliamentary agreement was in line with the provisions of Article 111 of the Rules of Procedure and Debates of the National Assembly. (Source: Prensa Latina)
