Havana, Feb. 23 (RHC)-- Cuban experts are engaged in the process of introducing five new technologies in the national health system to improve cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Dr. Mayka Guerrero, Director of the Technology Introduction Office with the Havana-based Center for Medical and Surgical Research, told the press that her team is working on a program to provide real time planning of radiotherapy treatment for patients. She mentioned specifically the installation of two pieces of equipment for the intra-surgical treatment of breast cancer, which will enable giving patients one single therapeutic dose of radiation during surgery.

The expert with the Center for Medical and Surgical Research also announced the introduction of an high-intensity ultrasound system to treat solid malignant tumors, which until now could only be eliminated through complex surgical procedures.

Since 2012, cancer has been the leading cause of death in Cuba. That is why the country has designed and implemented a comprehensive program for cancer control, which includes preventive measures, early diagnosis, accurate and timely treatment, rehabilitation and palliative care.
