Havana, June 12 (RHC)-- Cuban expert with the National Hygiene and Epidemiological Institute Maria Isabel Rodriguez triggered an alert on Thursday about the prevalence of cholera in Latin America, a disease she described as very old but re-emergent.

We have not yet eliminated cholera, but we must at least to cushion its effects, said the expert in hydro-related diseases during a lecture at a conference in Havana.

Rodriguez alerted the participants at the forum o the presence in the Caribbean area of more dangerous variants of the acute diarrheic condition, which can be lethal at times.

The expert said that varying climate and sanitary conditions of a given territory can brew the disease, a fact related to economic and social levels, as she pointed out that until appropriate sanitation conditions are guaranteed, cholera will exist.

Rodriguez stressed the strengthening of cholera surveillance actions in Cuba after the 2010 outbreak of the disease in Haiti.
