Tokyo, August 6 (RHC) – Fernando Gonzalez, vice president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) and Hero of the Republic of Cuba, participated on Thursday in a commemorative event in Hiroshima for the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing of that Japanese city.

A statement released by the Caribbean island's embassy in the Japanese capital says Gonzalez represented Havana in the official ceremony.

Gonzalez, also one of the anti-terrorism fighters known as the Cuban Five, took part in the World Conference Against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs, which took place in the framework of the commemorations.

In statements at the ceremony, the Cuban representative called for a full, transparent, verifiable and irreversible nuclear disarmament and reiterated Cuba's commitment to the total elimination of nuclear weapons.

The official ceremony held at the Peace Memorial in Hiroshima was attended by Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, and UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Kim Won-soo, among other figures from Germany, South Korea, China and other countries.

Accompanied by Cuba's ambassador to Japan, Marcos Rodriguez, Fernando Gonzalez has been developing an extensive program of activities in this country, including meetings with the Japanese Communist Party, lawyers, parliamentarians, and friends of Cuba, especially those who supported the cause of the Cuban Five.
