Havana, November 11 (RHC)-- The Deputy Director of the United States Division at Cuba's Foreign Ministry, Gustavo Machin, has announced that Havana and Washington have made concrete steps towards a short-term accord to establish regular flights between the two countries.

This was one of the issues most discussed over the past months, said Machin following the second meeting of the U.S.-Cuba Bilateral Commission on Tuesday, whose main objective was to define and follow up on issues related to the normalization of bilateral relations, according to Prensa Latina news agency.

Although the negotiations on this issue have not yet concluded, the two governments paved the way to implement the important decision and what is left now is the coordination of details through diplomatic channels so that the airline companies implement the agreement, said the official.

Also addressed was the re-establishment of direct postal services and specific measures to protect the environment, among other issues. The commission also considered new exchanges on maritime security, law enforcement, climate change and the expansion of collaboration related to health care and the assistance to third nations in this field.

Machin said that the two sides reiterated their willingness to expand talks on migration, trafficking in persons and on other issues of interest.
