Paris, December 29 (RHC)-- French scholar Salim Lamrani says "the United States has long used the migration issue to undermine the Cuban Revolution."

Lamrani said that Cubans who enter the United States illegally are welcomed with open arms, while those from other nations are immediately arrested and deported to their country of origin.

Writing on the website Global Research, the French intellectual noted that in its war against Cuba, Washington had resorted to using the migration issue in an effort to destabilize the island.

He recalled that in 1966, the U.S. Congress had adopted the Cuban Adjustment Act—a unique piece of U.S. legislation that stipulates that all Cubans reaching the U.S. legally or illegally, peacefully or using violence, automatically obtain permanent resident status after one year and one day.

Salim Lamrani pointed out that various social benefits are thrown in –including housing, employment and medical coverage as well as the possibility of obtaining U.S. citizenship after five years.

Lamrani considers repealing the Cuban Adjustment Act essential to achieving a normal Washington-Havana relationship.
