Havana, January 30 (RHC-teleSUR) -- Cuban health authorities have confirmed that there are still no cases of the Zika virus on the island. Health officials say that despite the lack of cases, Cuba is still vigilant and monitoring the situation closely.

Cuban health officials note that the virus could infect as many as four million people in the Americas, citing the latest figures from the World Health Organization. The WHO will convene an emergency meeting Monday in Montevideo, Uruguay, to determine its response, according to Margaret Chan, WHO Director General.

The virus, transmitted by mosquito, has spread across most of Latin American since a surge in infections was first detected in Brazil last October. Its symptoms include fever and joint pain that last about a week. It may also cause brain defects in children born to infected mothers.
