Cuba reiterates its support of the IAEA.

In recent days, Cuba reiterated its support for the work of the International Atomic Energy Agency, IAEA, with which the island maintains a long and fruitful cooperation relationship.

Cuba, a leading partner until 2021 of the Regional Cooperation Agreement for the Promotion of Nuclear Science and Technology in Latin America and the Caribbean, spoke before the Technical Assistance and Cooperation Committee of the Board of Governors.

As a founding member of that body, the Caribbean island has always advocated the peaceful use of nuclear energy and defended the right of poorer nations to access these technologies in order to advance towards development.

With more than six decades of collaborative bonds, the island has benefited from multiple bilateral agreements in the fields of health, agriculture and environment.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel has stressed the importance of this international organization’s support in the national implementation of the new nuclear techniques in medical care, particularly in the fight against cancer.  Cuba has also counted on its assistance in the fight against diseases transmitted by mosquitoes -- such as dengue and zika -- through the technique of sterile insects, an environmentally friendly technology that uses irradiation to control these species.

In the current global sanitary emergency, the    IAEA, an autonomous international organization within the UN system , has managed to send supplies to the Cuban territory, which include COVID 19 diagnostic tests, pulmonary ventilators, eyeglasses and protective suits.

In return, our nation has collaborated with the IAEA programs in Central America and the Caribbean, mainly regarding technical assistance, and has hosted training courses to improve diagnostic and treatment procedures using nuclear technologies.

Cuba works together with the International Atomic Energy Agency to strengthen existing cooperation links, create new alliances and advance in the development of nuclear applications for peaceful use in Latin America and the Caribbean.
