In politics and international relations nothing happens by spontaneous generation, much less in a crisis as serious as the one in Ukraine that could lead to a conflict of great proportions between Russia and the United States, plus its European NATO allies.

Such a delicate situation has been brewing for about two decades and there are protagonists in it who move in the shadows like a moth or, rather, a spider that weaves apparently casual webs, but whose long-term effects are usually very destructive.

In this and future works we will talk about one of these people, the US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Victoria Nuland, a woman with a great deal of experience in those matters where the boundaries between politics, conspiracy and military interests are blurred.

According to her biography, published by the State Department, before taking up her current position she was an advisor to the Albright Stonebridge Group, a global strategic advisory firm headed by the nefarious Madeleine Albright, do you remember her, back in William Clinton's time?

She is listed on her resume as having worked with the Brookings Institution and was a board member of the National Endowment for Democracy.

She studied at the National War College and Brown University; she was Special Envoy for Conventional Armed Forces in Europe, U.S. Permanent Representative to NATO, and Deputy National Security Advisor to Vice President Dick Cheney.

I am making this broad description of positions and studies to show that she is not only a passionate anti-Russian militant, but a very well prepared woman who knows well what she wants and how to get it.

The Argentine intellectual Atilio Borón reminds us that since 2013, when she worked with Obama, she organized the "soft" coup in Ukraine against the government of Victor Yanukovich, and there is a photo where she is seen participating in the demonstrations in Maidan Square, Kiev.

It was she and the U.S. ambassador in that country, Geofrey Pyatt, who chose Arseni Yatseniuk as Yanukovych's successor.

 Now Victoria Nuland is part of the Washington team that has the Ukrainian conflict in its hands and is holding talks with the Russian government, while shouting from the rooftops that a military invasion by Moscow is just around the corner.

In 2013 this lady publicly acknowledged that since 1991 the United States has been helping to "democratize" Ukraine and up to then had invested 5 billion dollars for that purpose.

There are good examples in Iraq and Afghanistan of what "democratizing" means for Washington and in them, in one way or another, Victoria Nuland has been involved. We'll continue with more on this subject, folks.
