The blockade against Cuba continues
The year 2024 has been characterized by great support for Cuba in its struggle against the U.S. blockade. Condemnations from governments, personalities and peoples, as well as multiple actions of solidarity were registered throughout the year, in which the Caribbean nation obtained a new and resounding victory at the UN.
For the thirty-second time, the UN General Assembly approved the draft resolution submitted by Cuba on the need to put an end to the economic siege, which from March 2023 to February 2024 alone caused losses to the country of more than US$5 BILLION, a figure that represents an increase of 189 million dollars over the previous period.
One hundred and eighty-seven nations voted in favor of putting an end to the unilateral and cruel measure, which affects all areas of society. No sector escapes its impact, which is felt particularly strong in health, education, industry, agriculture and the electro-energy system.
Once again the isolation of the United States became evident
in its hostile policy towards Cuba, it only had the support of Israel, its unconditional partner. There was one abstention, which was Moldova.
Representatives of numerous countries and regional and international organizations spoke out against the economic siege, which hinders the sustainable development of the largest Antillean island and its foreign trade and international financial relations.
At the seventy-ninth session of the General Assembly, which began in September, many world leaders in their speeches rejected the siege against the Cuban population, 80% of which has always lived under the blockade.
Multiple actions around the world preceded the days at the UN.
In 2024, the caravans of solidarity with the Cubans did not stop, which took place in cities in many countries, including the United States.
Solidarity meetings were held in Spain, China, Panama, Colombia and France throughout these twelve months. The Annual Conference of the National Network on Cuba, which brought together representatives of dozens of organizations and social movements, was also held in the U.S. city of Detroit.
In Cuba, in turn, the Day for Peace, against the Blockade and Terrorism took place. The initiative, promoted by the Cuban Institute of Friendship with Peoples (Instituto de Amistad con los Pueblos), was supported by solidarity movements from other nations.
Other campaigns in support of the Cuban people also stand out,
such as the Hands Off Cuba movement, carried out last July by the World Federation of Trade Unions, which gathers 105 million affiliates from 133 nations.
Throughout 2024, the national territory welcomed, as usual, friends of Cuban people. In Havana, the capital, the International Meeting of Solidarity with Cuba and against imperialism was held in May, with the participation of more than one thousand one hundred delegates from 58 countries, who coordinated new actions against the economic siege.
Likewise, Members of the Ernesto Che Guevara Brigades, from Canada; Venceremos, from the United States; Juan Rius Rivera, from Puerto Rico; and the José Martí Brigade, from Europe, also joined the Cuban people.
Speeches against the hostile U.S. policy were also heard at the Eighth CELAC Summit, Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, held in March in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, at the Inter-Party Forum and BRICS partners, which took place in June in the Russian city of Vladivostock and at the twenty-ninth Ibero-American Summit in November in Cuenca, Ecuador.
In 2024, there have been countless actions of solidarity with the Cuban people and the constant worldwide call for an end to the blockade, because Cuba has the right to live in peace.
