Caribbean Festival in Santiago de Cuba

Santiago de Cuba, July 9 (RHC) ‘The Burning of the Devil’ at La Alameda Avenue will put a close to the 39th International Caribbean Festival in the eastern Cuban city.

The festival’s closing session on Tuesday is scheduled to confirm Belize as the guest of honor of the 40th International Caribbean Festival in Santiago de Cuba in 2020, which will also be dedicated to the Santiago de Cuba based Siboney Studios of the Musical Recordings and Editing company EGREM, established at the initiative of Commander of the Revolution, Juan Almeida Bosque. With the attendance of some one thousand performers, artists and academics from over 30 countries, this year’s cultural gathering revered Uruguay, showing the links and African roots that unite Caribbean and Latin American peoples.

Some of the Caribbean Festival’s most important magical and religious ceremonies included an homage to slave rebellion at the Runaway Slave Monument located in the town of El Cobre, the Ode to Yemayá at Juan González beach and the Charge of la Mpaka, the symbol of the meet.Once more the Colloquium ‘the Caribbean that Unites Us’ discussed theoretical approaches on the history, spirituality and reality of the region with panels that even analyzed the African components of Uruguayan and Honduran cultures and their links with Cuba.

The festivities’ principal components were popular traditional cultural carrier groups which, with the burning of the straw totem that represents Lucifer, are set to send the best wishes to all participants and invoke the victory of good over evil. Beginning July 3rd the city of Santiago de Cuba was a multicolored mosaic of cultures.
