San Jose, August 17 (RHC)-- The Department of African and Caribbean Studies at the University of Costa Rica (UCR) will host the First Meeting of Afro-descendant Women Writers from August 20-23, the organizing committee announced in San Jose.

A press release, published on social media, points out that the meeting seeks to be a space to build networks among women writers in Central America and the Caribbean, and delegates from Panama, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Dominican Republic and Costa Rica will participate.

The event will be held at the Rodrigo Facio and Caribbean headquarters of the UCR, as part of the activities for the month of Afro-descendant culture in Costa Rica. In addition to presenting lectures on issues related to literary works in the region, participants will offer their art during poetic dialogue evenings.

The opening session will be held August 21 in the Joaquin Gutierrez Room of the Faculty of Humanities of the UCR, where the Minister for the Status of Women, Patricia Mora, UNESCO representative for Costa Rica, Esther Kuisch-Laroche, and human rights activist Angie Cruickshank will be present.

Members of the organizing committee revealed their interest in dedicating the event to the first woman of African descent to win a Nobel Prize in Literature, American writer Toni Morrison, who died recently.

The press release announces that the closing of the First Meeting of Afro-descendant Women Writers will be held on August 23 at the Caribbean Headquarters of the UCR, with a talk entitled 'Voices from the Caribbean.'
