Havana, July 9 (RHC) -- Cuba’s National Performing Arts Council has granted the 2020 National Theater Award to children's theater director Rubén Darío Salazar and designer Zenén Calero.

Salazar, who is the general director of Teatro Guiñol Nacional (National Puppet Theater Company), has a long career in children's theater and worked as a teacher and researcher of Cuban children's drama and its main cultivators, including the life and work of the Camejo brothers and writer Dora Alonso. A founder of Teatro de Las Estaciones (Las Estaciones Theater Company), the puppeteer and actor was previously presented with the Villanueva de la Crítica and Caricato awards by the Cuban Writers and Artists Association (Uneac) as well as the National Cultural Order for his more than 25- year-long career. Recently, the artist represented Cuba during the online conference of the International Puppet Union’s ResiliArt project.

The jury also awarded designer Zenén Calero, who has a solid career with the theater company Teatro de Las Estaciones and was awarded at the Rubén Vigón National Design Competition called by Uneac. The two theater experts are the heart and soul of Teatro de Las Estaciones, one of the most important such groups in Cuba, which has distinguished the island's children's creation in numerous theatrical events in the Caribbean and Central America.

The jury was made up of theater experts on the Caribbean island, including director Carlos Díaz, actress Verónica Lyn, director Gerardo Fulleda, Carlos Pérez Peña and designer Nieves Laferté. (Source: PL)
