Frei Betto and Fidel Castro

Havana, August 10(RHC)-- Brazilian liberation theologian Frei Betto said Cuban Revolution leader Fidel Castro sowed the seeds of freedom and hope among Cubans. Undoubtedly, his efforts bore fruit. Evidence of this, said the Brazilian priest, is the Cuban people’s firm resistance over nearly 60 years, in defense of national sovereignty and independence against Washington’s criminal blockade policy.

In a video circulating on social networks on the 95th birthday anniversary of Fidel Castro –to be celebrated on August 13th, Betto says that the Cuban leader was a good friend and leader – an honorable and humble man. ‘Every time I think about Fidel Castro, I remember the famous quote by Cuban National Hero José Martí, who said that ‘all the glory of the world lies in a grain of corn.’

A celebrated writer, Frei Betto praises Fidel’s endless wisdom and his vision. He praises particularly Cuba’s world-class scientific achievements under the Revolution, specially the development of vaccines against Covid-19.

In the video, Betto commends also the Caribbean island state’s strong solidarity with other nations and peoples the world over.

The author of some 70 books, Frei Betto stressed that the pandemic has brought to light the worst features of rotten capitalism.

‘I thank God for Fidel’s life. We are here, strongly committed to following the huge legacy that he left behind,’ he said.
