Camagüey, Feb. 8 (RHC)-- The first concert as tribute to maestro, the late Adalberto Álvarez was held Saturday in the eastern Cuban city of Camagüey, in the framework of the cultural week there on the 508th anniversary of the former Villa de Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe –today’s the City of Camagüey.

A composer, arranger, pianist and band leader, Adalberto –the leader of the orchestra Adalberto Álvarez y su Son-- died in September of 2021 due to complications associated with Covid-19.

Born in Havana in 1947, Adalberto was named illustrious son of Camagüey, where he achieved stardom for his vast artistic work.

One of the greatest all-time exponents of Cuban son music, he was the main organizer of the ‘Fiesta del Tinajón’ to promote the work of Cuban creators.

Hits composed by Adalberto like ‘¿Y qué tú quieres que te den?’, ‘A bailar el toca toca, and ‘A Bayamo en coche’, are considered Cuban son classics.

A National Music Prize laureate, Adalberto Álvarez recorded more than 30 albums. He was the main promoter of the campaign that ended with the institution of May 8th as Cuban Son Day, which was first celebrated in 2021, amidst Covid-19.
