Guatemala International Book Fair to host three works from Cuba
Guatemala City, Jul 8 (RHC) The XXI International Book Fair of Guatemala (Filgua) is finalizing today the details for the presentation of three volumes from Cuba in the genres of children's literature, narrative and essay.
The wide-ranging program of the event, that will be held until next Sunday at the Majadas Forum in the capital, included the first national edition of the magazine La Edad de Oro, by José Martí, prepared by the Editorial Cultura of the Ministry of Culture and Sports.
In the Miguel Angel Asturias hall on Friday 12, a dissertation by Mauricio Nuñez, PhD in Literary Sciences from the largest island of the Caribbean, related to this 1889 classic, which promotes the teaching of ethics based on principles and values, is scheduled for Friday 12.
This reprint will be the third installment of a working agreement between Editorial Cultura guatemalteca and the Centro de Estudios Martianos of Havana, Cuba.
Previously, the only novel by the Cuban National Hero, Lucia Jerez, and the essay Guatemala, which gathers the author's impressions during his stay in the land of the quetzal from March 1877 to July 1878, were published here.
On Saturday the 13th, the Majadas Once Museum will host an exhibition on the Alejo Carpentier Award 2020 winning essay, Silencios y recepciones: la novela de José Martí, by researcher Núñez.
This book "contains all the ingredients of a solid exercise of literary criticism; but at the same time, it also reaches a high level of social interpretation that is not abundant in traditional philological studies," said Cuban historian Antonio Alvarez, who lives in Costa Rica.
In addition, as part of the incorporation of the Serie Periferia publishing house to its catalog of writers from the Caribbean Island, the novel "Tan cerca hemos dormido" by narrator and poet Carlos Zamora will be on display.
Núñez, also a critic and journalist, wrote of the previous work that recreates at the level of friendship, feelings, the individual, the conflicts of migration, a theme to which this year's Filgua is dedicated.
The 2024 edition of the country's most important book event also celebrates the legacy and relevance of Nobel Literature Prize winner Miguel Ángel Asturias, 50 years after his departure and 125 years after his birth.
Since 2000, this festival of possibilities for knowledge has sought to bring together different social groups in Guatemala with the purpose of stimulating reading and critical thinking.
The XX edition took place in person from July 6 to 16, 2023, dedicated to Dante Liano, winner of the National Literature Prize in 1991.
The director of the Publishers Association of Guatemala, Diana Lopez, estimated the arrival of 80 thousand people during these 10 days, a figure similar to that recorded last year. (Source: Prensa Latina)
