Havana, February 8 (RHC) -- “Descendences” is the title of the collective exhibition that is on display until March 1st in the lobby of the Covarrubias Sala at the National Theater, as part of the XV Havana Biennial.

Open to the public since the end of November 2024 with the work of Cuban creators of the visual arts, mostly women, the show includes the work of five Cuban photographers based on the Caribbean island, three who live in the United States, and one from that country.

The exhibition features pieces by artists Sonia Almaguer, Claudia Corrales, Yari Rassi, Titina (Yoanne), Marila Sarduy, Claudia Millares, Laura Pairot, Leticia Sánchez and the North American Liza Camilo. They were joined by the Cuban video artist Livan Gispert.

According to the curator and general producer of the exhibition, Mayda Tirado, codes and elements of Cuban culture stand out in their works.

“In this exhibition, the theme of descent acts as a common thread that unites the artists, each offering a unique perspective on how family and cultural stories are transmitted and transformed over time,” she explained in the words of the exhibition catalogue.

On the walls of the Covarrubias hall's entrance hall, viewers will find everything from intimate portraits that explore family lineages to images that celebrate traditions rooted in Cuban culture.

This meant that race emerges in the pieces as another crucial theme, explored through portraits that challenge stereotypes and celebrate beauty and racial diversity within Cuban society.
