
Isla de la Juventud, April 7 (RHC)-- The Isla Verde International Caribbean Film and Environment Festival returns for its third edition in Cuba, with headquarters on the Isla de la Juventud until April 12th.
The film competition will feature a selection of 38 high-quality films, according to its leader, actor and director Jorge Perugorría, 2024 National Film Award winner, regarding the works chosen to compete in its various categories.
He noted that 10 feature films, 20 short films, and eight proposals of Films in Progress, the latter a new category dedicated to projects in development, will compete.
For the first time, Isla Verde will have a guest of honor, Spain. Therefore, on this opening day, the Cuban premiere of the feature film Mariposas Negras, an animated documentary winner of the Goya Award for Best Animated Film 2025, will be screened.
The general program includes workshops, conferences, training sessions, and exchanges related to ecology, sustainable tourism, biodiversity, and the circular economy.
Music, visual arts, and other forms of expression are also highlighted, with competing works from countries such as Cuba, Argentina, Spain, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, and Chile.
The jury is made up of prominent figures from the fields of film, literature, science, and photography to ensure a multidisciplinary evaluation of the competing works, according to the organizers.
The event pays special tribute to Cuban biologist Jorge Ramón Cuevas (1941-2000) and Spanish scientist Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente (1928-1980), two renowned communicators and pioneers who popularized television programs focused on environmental stewardship.
National Visual Arts Prize winners Manuel Mendive and José Ángel Toirac will share their experiences with the local public.
This event is supported by the Antonio Núñez Jiménez Foundation for Nature and Man, the Gorría Gallery, UNESCO and its Transcultura program, and funding from the European Union.
National and international experts and scientists will also be present, and activities and exchanges will be open to the public.
