New York, September 13 (RHC/PL) -- Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev defeated Serbian Novak Djokovic in three sets today in the final of the U.S. Open and won his first Grand Slam title.

Aged 25 and in his third final at this level, Medvedev overcame the world number one Serb 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and 15 minutes of battle, to celebrate his fourth win in nine matches against Djokovic and avenge this year's setback in Australia.

In his second match for the crown in New York, the Russian racket prevented the Balkan from reaching his fourth Grand Slam crown in the same season and break the 20-title 'big' titles embrace with the Swiss Roger Federer and the Spanish Rafael Nadal.

On the Arthur Ashe Stadium court, Medvedev hit 38 winners and 16 aces in the match against Djokovic, valid to integrate a list of three compatriots with successes in a Grand Slam, after the victories of Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Marat Safin.

With this victory, the main Russian tennis player of the moment consolidates his second position in the world ranking and surpasses 40 victories in the campaign, with highlights for the titles in the ATP 250 of Mallorca (June) and the Masters 1000 of Toronto (August).
