Burnes and Ray win Cy Young in elite U.S. baseball

Havana, November 18 (RHC)-- Pitchers Corbin Burnes of the Milwaukee Brewers and Robbie Ray of the Toronto Blue Jays are celebrating today their election for the first time as Cy Young award winners in both circuits of U.S. elite baseball.

Burnes, the leader of the Brewers' rotation, took a close 151-141 win over fellow right-hander Zack Wheeler of the Philadelphia Phillies after finishing tied for first place in the National League with 12.

The difference in favor of Burnes, came in the number of ballots to occupy the second place, with 14 to nine for the Phillies pitcher. With this award, Burnes becomes the third pitcher to win the Cy Young in the history of the Brewers, after Pete Vuckovic and Rollie Fingers won it in 1981 and 1982, respectively.

Burnes' triumph was supported by a fabulous performance, as he won 11 games and fell in five, threw 167 innings, struck out 234 opponents to record the best strikeout per game average, in addition to signing an effectiveness of 2.63 and a WHIP of 0.94.

Meanwhile, Robbie Ray with the Blue Jays, had no setbacks to win in the American League, after starring in a dream campaign, far superior to the one achieved a season ago.

The Toronto left-hander, after making technical adjustments, won 13 games and lost seven, threw for 2.84 clean runs, struck out 248 opponents in 193.1 and gave up a WHIP of 1.05.

These numbers earned him the American League award with 207 points and 29 first-place votes, to 123 and one for New York Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole.
