Havana, December 28 (RHC)-- The death of Hugo Maradona, the brother of the great Diego Maradona, who died at the age of 52 of a heart attack at his home in Naples, Italy, where he lived, caused a great commotion in Argentina today.

The media and fans of the Pibe de Oro remember Hugo, known as El Turco, who was found lifeless at his home in the Procida mountain area, a year and a month after his brother's death.

The youngest of the Maradona family, born on May 9, 1969, like his brothers Diego and Raul, was dedicated to soccer and photos immortalized him next to the great Pelusa, wearing the albiceleste jersey.

As a player of the Argentinos Juniors youth team, he was called up for the Argentina national team that played in the 1985 South American Under 16 Championship in Buenos Aires. Under the guidance of coach Carlos Pachamé and with a team that included Fernando Redondo, Lorenzo Frutos, Fernando Kuyumchoglu and Pedro Salaberry, he was crowned champion after defeating Brazil 3-2 in the decisive match, in a packed Amalfitani stadium, with one of his goals.

On Tuesday, Olé newspaper recalled that he played 19 official matches at La Paternal until he fulfilled his dream of being transferred to Napoli to share a team with his brother.

Hugo did not have many chances to play and, in search of continuity, went to Ascoli, which was in the Italian Serie A. In that season he played against "10" in an official match, according to the media. During his career he also played for other teams such as Rayo Vallecano, in Spain; Rapid Vienna, in Austria; and in Argentina for Brown de Arrecifes.

Since Maradona's death on November 25, 2020, the Turco has been very sad.  "Every day that goes by the pain is growing because being far away I can't believe it.  I wake up in the morning and say tonight I'll call him, as we did every Friday.  He knew I was calling him.  Every day the pain is greater," he said in a recent interview when remembering his brother.
