Havana, January 8 (RHC)-- Cuba plans to attend the Continental Boxing Championship scheduled for March 22 to April 2 in the Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil.
The president of its federation, Alberto Puig de la Barca, explained to JIT that the aspiration is to be present in a lid that in addition to putting at stake the crowns of the continent will assign points for the world ranking.
"We have even proposed that it be considered as part of the qualification for the Central American and Caribbean Games and the Pan American Games of 2023, as a formula to stimulate participation," he said.
The executive added that the integration of the Island's team will depend on how the competitive calendar is configured, based on the definitive characteristics of that event and its possible coincidence with the intended incursion in commitments against professionals.
"We have already made the first assessments with the national technical staff and the alternatives have been identified, based on the fact that it is a tournament of interest to us," Puig said.
Asked about the competition, the president of the American Boxing Confederation, José Laureano, commented via Internet that as an additional incentive, the medals will be complemented by cash prizes for the contestants of both sexes.
"It's going to be a sports party, because in addition to the competition we will organize improvement courses for coaches, referee-judges and technical officials, and a meeting with the presidents of the national federations of America," he said.
"I saw a lot of enthusiasm from all the government authorities and the local organizing committee", Laureano had expressed as a result of an evaluation visit.
