Vuelta a Cuba cycling classic returns
Havana, February 18 (ACN)-- The Vuelta a Cuba, an emblematic road cycling tournament, will return in 2022 with a new format, a regional race, starting in eastern Baracoa on February 23 and continuing in the central region in April and the western region in May.
According to the sports publication Jit, the essential thing, after two years without competitions due to the Covid-19, is to keep alive the road modality in both genders, since it begins an Olympic cycle in which this sport has set ambitious goals.
The women's classic is scheduled from March 17 to 22 in the central zone, starting in Camagüey and finishing in Ciego de Avila, Sancti Spíritus, Villa Clara and Cienfuegos, Pablo Arturo Campins, national cycling commissioner, told Jit.
The Vuelta a Cuba on eastern roads will have teams from the provinces involved in the route: in order, Guantánamo, Santiago de Cuba, Granma, Holguín and Las Tunas. There will also be sextets from the national team and the Cienfuegos Technical Center.
If teams from other zones want to participate they can do so, but they must cover all their expenses and guarantee the car that will help the team, said the director.
He also commented that after a tour of the eastern provinces "we are happy with the support we will have for our riders and the people to enjoy a good event. That is the purpose: to comply with the races planned in the country in 2022, which serve as preparation for those who will represent us in the most important events in this cycle at the Central Caribbean, Pan American and Olympic levels".
